Some people look down instructors that teach Wing Chun at
a park or out of their garage. They believe a real school should be
well-equipped with wall bags, mats on the floor, a wooden dummy, and a bunch
of other students.
The fact is that no one should ever look down on good old
park or garage training! No student should be embarrassed to study with a Wing
Chun instructor who teaches at a park or out of a garage. Some instructors
prefer to teach only small groups of individuals so that there can be more one
on one interaction for quicker learning. A student should consider it an honor
to be allowed to train in such a small and exclusive environment.
Some instructors teach out of their garages, or at
the park, because their primary pursuit is to hone their abilities. They also
do not heavily promote themselves or their arts. They prefer to invest their
time teaching and not on all the other baggage that comes with running a martial
arts school. They might have a day job and teach as a hobby. They would rather
focus their precious free time honing skills and developing their students’
skills. This is especially true with Wing Chun which requires training partners.
Come try it before you knock it!
